The Beyond Borders Book Club 2018-2019

The Beyond Borders Book Club 2018-2019

Are you from another country but living in or near Clare? Do you love books? Would you like to be part of Ireland’s friendliest book festival? Would you like to introduce people in Clare to your favourite book by a writer from your country? Well, look no further. Following on from its success last year Ennis Book Club Festival is once again looking for four people from countries other than Ireland to play a part in this year’s Beyond Borders Book Club.

Format for The Beyond Borders Book Club
The Beyond Borders Book Club will take place once a month for four months during the winter of 2018/19 and will finish with a panel discussion during the weekend of the Ennis Book Club Festival 1st - 3rd March 2019. Each event will be chaired by Clare based poet and Community worker Sarah Clancy who will interview each participant in front of an audience about the book they have chosen.

Who are we looking for?
We are looking to select four people who live in Clare but are from another country or whose family came here from another country, who will then present their favourite book by a writer from that country to the book club and discuss what they love about it and the culture it comes from. All the other people attending each evening will have had a chance to buy and read the books chosen and so will be looking forward to talking with the presenters about them.

All four of the people selected for these book club evenings will then be invited to form a panel for a live event at Ennis Book Club Festival itself where they will discuss their choice of book and author in front of an audience.

Each presenter that is selected will be paid a fee towards their expenses of €200 for the project and will be included in the festival programme and website. No experience is necessary for this but lots of enthusiasm will be required- we are not looking for experts on literature but for people who love a particular book and
want to tell other people about it.

Why are we doing it?
Apart from the fact that we love books and love talking about them, we, at Ennis Book Club Festival are aware that County Clare is a very diverse county, with the latest figures showing that 9.5% of Clare residents are from outside Ireland and that there are many more people again who hold dual nationality. Ennis Book Club Festival prides itself on being a welcoming festival where members of book clubs from all around the country gather and enjoy the pleasure of literature and books in an informal and relaxed environment. Ennis Book Club Festival would like to make sure that this welcome is extended to people from other countries and backgrounds who live in Clare. We are sure the Beyond Borders Book Club could be just the thing, and of course, we’ll get to hear about some great books from other places and cultures…
