A firm festival favourite – 10 Books never disappoints. This year we’ve invited novelist and yoga-guru Paula McGrath back to chair our authors’ passionate recommendations.
Ruth Gilligan is a novelist from Dublin now based in the UK where she works as a Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing at the University of Birmingham. She has published four novels to date and was the youngest person ever to top the Irish Bestsellers’ List. Her fifth novel, The Butchers, is set during the 1996 BSE crisis and will be published in March 2020. Ruth writes regular reviews for the Times Literary Supplement, Guardian and Irish Independent. She is an ambassador for the global storytelling charity Narrative 4.Neil Hegarty grew up in Derry. His novels include The Jewel, published to widespread praise in 2019; and Inch Levels, which was shortlisted for the Kerry Group Novel of the Year award in 2017.Other titles include Frost: That Was the Life That Was, a biography of David Frost; and The Story of Ireland, which accompanies the BBC television history of Ireland. His essays and short fiction have appeared in the Dublin Review, Stinging Fly, Tangerine and elsewhere; and he is a regular literary reviewer for the Irish Times. Neil lives in Dublin.
