Caoilte Breatnach – Longlines

A reading by Caoilte Breatnach from his new book, Longlines, focusing on the challenges facing militant republicans in Ireland during the peace process negotiations in the mid-1990s. Caoilte was raised in a trilingual environment (Irish, Spanish and English). His parents and siblings were involved in various republican and socialist issues and in defending human rights. Caoilte has worked as a translator for many years and contributed to heritage and cultural publications.
In Longlines, JJ Hynes is 42, a veteran of the Troubles who has sacrificed his life and family to the cause. Now he’s on the run. Traumatised, bewildered, JJ finds refuge in the Netherlands with a survivor of the Dutch Resistance who is also haunted by memories of the past.
History, politics, and possible redemption come together here in a book that reads like a thriller but asks serious and important questions about the interweaving of personal and national trauma.
