John Gibbons in conversation with Féidhlim Harty

The Lie of the Land is a fascinating critique of the decisions that have put Ireland into a  hugely  vulnerable position ecologically, and it serves as a devastating dissection of the wishful thinking and duplicity that have propped up the status quo in Irish agribusiness. John Gibbons details what he describes at the “ultra-cosy relationship between farm leaders and the State” and is particularly scathing of their role in this crisis. This event, where he will be in conversation with Féidhlim Harty, an environmental consultant, will be essential for anyone interested in the future of farming and agriculture in Ireland.

Gibbons’ book is not short on solutions, though. It offers an inspiring vision of how we can prepare for the new realities of the climate crisis. This would, according to him, require a revolution in farming, development of renewable energy (including our vast offshore wind resource), and a dramatic acceleration of moves to decarbonise transport and housing. Gibbons points out many successes, such as the halving of emissions from individual homes between 2005 and 2022 and the impressive ramping up of electricity generation from onshore wind and solar.
