In autumn 2017, we put a call out to find book lovers from another country but living in Clare who would like introduce people in Clare to their favourite book by a writer from their country.
The result is The Beyond Borders Book Club, where four people from four different countries attend and present their favourite book to the book club and discuss what they love about it and the culture it comes from. All the other people attending will have a chance to read the books the four presenters have chosen in advance and will be looking forward to talking with them about each book
The presenters and their chosen books are:
Margaret Khalil from Egypt presented ‘Palace Walk’ by Naguib Mahfouz – Thursday 11th January
Małgorzata Buchalik from Poland presented The Street of Crocodiles by Bruno Schulz – Thursday 18th January
Carlos Navotka from Argentina presents The Gaucho Martin Fierro by Jose Hernandez – Thursday 25th January,
Ifeoma Ugwueru from Nigeria presents Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe – Thursday 1st February,
The initial book club evenings take place over four weeks on Thursdays at 8pm at the Rowan Tree Cafe Bar. All four of the people selected for these book club evenings will then form a panel for a live event at Ennis Book Club Festival 2018, The Beyond Borders Book Club at 3.30pm on Sunday 4th March in Temple Gate Hotel, where they will discuss their choice of book and author in front of a live audience.
Each event is chaired by Clare based poet and community worker Sarah Clancy. All welcome, free of charge.
