Historical Fiction – Sarah Waters, Andrew Miller and Nuala O’Connor in conversation with Juliana Adelman

Historical fiction allows us to step inside the minds of those who have shaped the world we live in, and to imagine the all-too human side of history. At its best, it creates a deeply rich experience of the past, making it come alive through vivid details, rich characters, and emotional depth. This panel will be a discussion with three writers who are masters of their craft, moderated by historian and writer Juliana Adelman.

Sarah Waters is the author of six novels, including Tipping the Velvet,  Fingersmith,  and The Little Stranger. Her novels have been shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize and the Women’s Prize for Fiction and she has won the Betty Trask Award and the Somerset Maugham Award.

Andrew Miller is the author of 10 novels. His latest, The Land in Winter, won the 2025 Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction and the 2025 Winston Graham Historical Prize. The novel was also shortlisted for the 2025 Booker Prize.

Nuala O’Connor’s most recent novel is Seaborne, a re-telling of the life of Irish pirate Anne Bonny. It was nominated for the Dublin Literary Award 2025. Nuala’s fifth novel NORA , about Nora Barnacle, wife to James Joyce, was published to critical acclaim in 2021.
